Apple iPhone Success

Apple’s iPhone is selling like hotcakes. This should be good news for Sprint (S), AT&T (T), and Verizon (VZ).  The reality is far different; Apple is killing phone carriers.Sprint just reported quarterly earnings and says it sold 1.8 million iPhones.  However, the earnings report showed that iPhone is killing profits at Sprint.  Sprint said that 40% of iPhone sales in the fourth quarter were to new customers. The iPhone is certainly bringing in new business to Sprint, but Sprint has to  subsidize iPhones heavily.  Sprint wanted the iPhone so bad that it guaranteed Apple $15.5 billion for the ability to sell Apple products over the next four years.

Previously when AT&T reported earnings for the fourth quarter, they were also dragged down by heavy iPhone subsidization costs.I have previously written about the impact of the iPhone on Verizon in an article titled Apple iPhone A Bittersweet Taste For Verizon. An iPhone 4S that a consumer can buy for $199 with a two year contract reportedly costs carriers about $500.Moreover, iPhones are data hogs.  Carriers have to make major investments to support the huge traffic volume.

iPhone 4S is particularly troublesome to carriers.  The Siri virtual assistant feature in iPhone 4S connects to an Apple data center every time it is used.  For background, please see my prior article Siri Is Apple’s Post-Jobs Ticket To $1,000.  Siri users end up consuming twice the bandwidth compared to those who do not use Siri.Special Offer: Get 13 undervalued stocks from value expert John Buckingham in the Free Special Report 2012: Time For Value. Click here for instant access.

Increased traffic is a vicious cycle for carriers.  More traffic means more dropped calls and more difficulties using Siri.  This results in more calls to customer service and churn of users.
Carriers are between a rock and a hard place.  They have to carry the iPhone to attract customers, but it costs them.  In comparison, devices based on Google (GOOG) Android, and those from Research In Motion (RIMM) are subsidized to a lesser degree.

Tweetbot Releases of iPad app

Popular iPhone Twitter client Tweetbot this week released an iPad app and gave the iPhone version an update.
The revamped iPhone app, which is free for current users, comes with a number of improvements to the timeline and direct message views. The refreshed timeline now includes image thumbnails and colored links as well as an integrated, clickable "Retweeted by" bar. Cell colors have been modified to make the timeline more pleasing on the eye. Also, now it only takes a single tap to open a link.

The new direct message view looks similar to Apple's iMessage design. The update also brings timed auto refresh, meaning users' timelines, mentions, and direct messages will refresh automatically, every five minutes.Among the bevy of other enhancements in Version 2.0 is also a re-designed "New Tweets" bar (which can be dismissed and configured). Additionally, links in users' bios are now clickable and scrolling performance was improved. Finally, users can now find a "huge" font size for larger text under settings display.

The new iPad app, meanwhile, is now available for users running iOS 5 and above. New iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users will have to shell out $2.99 for the app.Tweetbot was released last year, giving the official Twitter client for iPhone a run for its money feature-wise. For example, Tweetbot gives users a single-swipe method to view conversations, the ability to view your Twitter lists as your main stream, customizable tabs and views, and push notifications.

IPhone Owns

Canaccord Genuity
Our monthly channel checks indicated very strong sales trends for the iPhone 4S at all three U.S. carriers and overall strong iPhone sales in international markets. We are increasing our March-quarter iPhone estimates from 30.1 million to 32.6 million units.

We reiterate our Buy rating and increase our price target to $665 from $650. Apple (ticker: AAPL) remains a top pick.

With the strong iPhone market-share gains during the fourth quarter, we estimate Apple generated a remarkable 80% share of estimated fourth-quarter handset-industry operating profit versus 56% in the third quarter and 48% in fourth-quarter 2010 with only 8.1% global handset-market share.

Demonstrating the strength of the iPhone's profit-share gains during fourth-quarter 2011, Samsung's share of industry profit declined from roughly 26% in third-quarter 2011 to 15% in fourth-quarter 2011 even though Samsung's share of Android smartphones increased from 35% in third-quarter 2011 to 39% in fourth-quarter 2011.

Our January checks indicated the iPhone continues to extend its market-share gains from the fourth quarter. In fact, we believe iPhones are outselling all other smartphones combined at the Sprint Nextel (S), AT&T (T) and Verizon Wireless [a joint venture of Verizon Communications (VZ) and Vodafone Group (VOD)] channels since the iPhone 4S launch.

We are increasing our iPhone estimates for fiscal-second-quarter 2012 or the March quarter from 30.1 million to 32.6 million units. Considering the March quarter has one less week than the December quarter and excludes the very strong sales week between Christmas and New Year's Eve, we anticipate a sequential drop in March-quarter sales versus the 37.0 million iPhones sold during the December quarter.

Even with this sequential drop in iPhone sales, we believe this is better than normal industry seasonality and anticipate Apple's iPhone share gains will continue as Apple and Android continue to take share from BlackBerry and Symbian. We have increased our 2012 iPhone estimates from 140 million to 148 million units, as we believe Apple will continue its strong iPhone momentum and capture market share during calendar 2012.

In fact, we believe an iPhone 5 with long term evolution (LTE) technologies and a new iPhone form factor could result in even stronger iPhone sales than our increased estimates for second-half 2012. In the near-term, our checks indicate smartphone competitors have delayed smartphone launches in an attempt to avoid competing with the recent iPhone 4S launch and ahead of a potential iPhone 5 announcement in mid-2012.

Only Nokia (NOK) made significant product announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show with the Lumia 710 launching at T-Mobile and the LTE Lumia 900 on track to launch in AT&T in March. While Motorola Mobility Holdings (MMI) announced new products such as the Droid Razr Maxx and the Droid 4, these products are basically derivatives of the Droid Razr family. Therefore, with a limited selection of new smartphones shipping in first-quarter 2012, we believe Apple will gain smartphone market share during the quarter.

Our monthly handset channel checks and recent earnings reports from the leading global handset/smartphone original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs) indicate strong sales of smartphones during fourth-quarter 2011. However, the timing of the iPhone 4S refresh in October resulted in Apple gaining a remarkable 900 basis points of smartphone market share during fourth-quarter 2011.

While we estimate Samsung's share of Android smartphones increased from 35% in third-quarter 2011 to 39% in fourth-quarter 2011, Samsung's overall smartphone market share fell from 23.4% in third-quarter 2011 to 22.7% in fourth-quarter 2011 due to Apple's impressive share gains. OEMs such as Huawei [of China] and ZTE [of China] have taken advantage of growing smartphone sales in emerging markets, resulting in both OEMs gaining market share throughout 2011.

Features of iOS

Home screen
The home screen (rendered by "SpringBoard") displays application icons and a dock at the bottom of the screen where users can pin their most frequently used apps. The home screen appears whenever the user switches on the device or presses the "Home" button (a physical button on the device). The screen has a status bar across the top to display data, such as time, battery level, and signal strength. The rest of the screen is devoted to the current application.
Since iOS version 3.0, a Spotlight Search function has been available on the left page of the home screen page allowing users to search through media, applications, emails, contacts and similar files.

Folders
With iOS 4 came the introduction of a simple folder system. When applications are in "jiggle mode", any two can be dragged on top of each other to create a folder, and from then on, more apps can be added to the folder using the same procedure, up to 12 on iPhone and iPod touch and 20 on iPad. A title for the folder is automatically selected by the type of applications inside, but the name can also be edited by the user.

 Notification Center
In the iOS 5 update, the notifications feature has been completely redesigned. Notifications now collate in a window which can be dragged down from the top of the screen, much like Google's Android Operating System. If a user touches a received notification, he/she will go to the application that sent the notification.

 Included applications
The iOS home screen contains these default "apps". Some of these applications are hidden by default and accessed by the user through the Settings app or another method—for instance, Nike+iPod is activated through the Settings app.

The iPod touch retains the same applications that are present by default on the iPhone, with the exception of the Phone, Messages, Compass and Camera (before the 4th generation) apps. The "iPod" App previously present on the iPhone was split into two apps with iOS 5, Music and Videos, as it always has been on the iPod touch. The bottom row of applications is also used to delineate the iPod touch's main purposes: Music, Videos, Safari, and App Store (Dock Layout was changed in 3.1 Update). For the 4th Generation iPod touch, it includes FaceTime and Camera, and the dock layout had changed to Music, Mail, Safari, Video. As of iOS 5.0, "iMessage" will be available on all iOS devices running iOS 5. iMessage is effectively a version of the iPhone Messages app that sends free text or multimedia messages to other iOS devices (similar to BlackBerry Messenger).

The iPad comes with the same applications as the iPod touch excluding Stocks, Weather, Clock, Calculator, and the Nike + iPod app. Separate music and video apps are provided, as on the iPod touch, although (as on the iPhone) the music app is named "iPod". Although, that was changed in iOS 5 to "Music", to match the other devices in the family. In iOS 5, the iPod app will be replaced by Music and Video apps on all devices. Most of the default applications are completely rewritten to take advantage of the iPad's larger display. The default dock layout includes Safari, Mail, Photos and Music.

Multitasking
Before iOS 4, multitasking was limited to a selection of the applications Apple included on the devices.Starting with iOS 4, on 3rd-generation and newer iOS devices, multitasking is supported through seven background APIs:

Background audio - application continues to run in the background as long as it is playing audio or video content
Voice over IP - application is suspended when a phone call is not in progress
Background location - application is notified of location changes
    Push notifications
Local notifications - application schedules local notifications to be delivered at a predetermined time
Task completion - application asks the system for extra time to complete a given task
Fast app switching - application does not execute any code and may be removed from memory at any time

Switching applications
Double-clicking the home button activates the application switcher. A scrollable dock-like interface appears from the bottom, moving the contents of the screen up. Choosing an icon switches to an application. To the far left are icons which function as music controls, a rotation lock, and on iOS 4.2 and above, a volume controller. Holding the icons briefly makes them "jiggle" (similarly to the homescreen) and allows the user to force quit the applications by simply tapping the red minus circle that appears at the corner of the app's icon.

Game Center
Game Center is an online multiplayer "social gaming network"released by Apple. It allows users to "invite friends to play a game, start a multiplayer game through matchmaking, track their achievements, and compare their high scores on a leader board." iOS 5 and above adds support for profile photos.

Game Center was announced during an iOS 4 preview event hosted by Apple on April 8, 2010. A preview was released to registered Apple developers in August. It was released on September 8, 2010 with iOS 4.1 on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 2nd generation through 4th generation. Game Center made its public debut on the iPad with iOS 4.2.1. There will be no support for the iPhone 3G and original iPhone. However, Game Center is unofficially available on the iPhone 3G via a hack.

Development
The applications must be written and compiled specifically for iOS and the ARM architecture. The Safari web browser supports web applications as with other web browsers. Authorized third-party native applications are available for devices running iOS 2.0 and later through Apple's App Store.

SDK
On October 17, 2007, in an open letter posted to Apple's "Hot News" weblog, Steve Jobs announced that a software development kit (SDK) would be made available to third-party developers in February 2008.The SDK was released on March 6, 2008, and allows developers to make applications for the iPhone and iPod touch, as well as test them in an "iPhone simulator". However, loading an application onto the devices is only possible after paying an iPhone Developer Program fee.
As of January 7, 2012, the fees to join the respective programs for iOS and OSX were stated at $99.00 per app.Since the release of Xcode 3.1, Xcode is the development environment for the iOS SDK. iPhone applications, like iOS and Mac OS X, are written in Objective-C.

Developers are able to set any price above a set minimum for their applications to be distributed through the App Store, of which Apple will take 30% of the revenue (the other 70% goes to the developer). Alternately, they may opt to release the application for free and need not pay any costs to release or distribute the application except for the membership fee.

 Jailbreaking
Ever since its initial release, iOS has been subject to a variety of different hacks centered around adding functionality not allowed by Apple. Prior to the 2008 debut of the native iOS App Store, the primary motive for jailbreaking was to install third-party native applications, which was not allowed by Apple at the time.Apple has claimed that it will not release iOS software updates designed specifically to break these tools (other than applications that perform SIM unlocking); however, with each subsequent iOS update, previously un-patched jailbreak exploits are usually patched.Ever since the arrival of Apple's native iOS App Store, and—along with it—third-party applications, the general motives for jailbreaking have changed. People now jailbreak for many different reasons, including pirating App Store applications, gaining filesystem access, installing custom device themes, and modifying the device SpringBoard. In 2010, the EFF successfully convinced the U.S. Copyright Office to reject Apple's claim that jailbreaking is in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and declare that iOS jailbreaking is legal in the United States.

Digital rights management
The closed and proprietary nature of iOS has garnered criticism, particularly by digital rights advocates such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, computer engineer and activist Brewster Kahle, Internet-law specialist Jonathan Zittrain, and the Free Software Foundation who protested the iPad's introductory event and have targeted the iPad with their "Defective by Design" campaign.Competitor Microsoft, via a PR spokesman, has also criticized Apple's control over its platform.

At issue are restrictions imposed by the design of iOS, namely DRM intended to lock purchased media to Apple's platform, the development model (requiring a yearly subscription to distribute apps developed for the iOS), the centralized approval process for apps, as well as Apple's general control and lockdown of the platform itself. Particularly at issue is the ability for Apple to remotely disable or delete apps at will.

Some in the tech community have expressed concern that the locked-down iOS represents a growing trend in Apple's approach to computing, particularly Apple's shift away from machines that hobbyists can "tinker with" and note the potential for such restrictions to stifle software innovation. However, there are some outside of Apple who have voiced support for the iOS closed model. Facebook developer Joe Hewitt, who had previously protested against Apple's control over its hardware as a "horrible precedent", has subsequently argued the locked apps in the iPad are akin to web applications and provide added security.

iOS in iphone

iOS (formerly iPhone OS) is Apple Inc.'s mobile operating system. Originally developed for the iPhone, it has since been extended to support other Apple Inc. devices such as the iPod Touch, iPad, and Apple TV. Apple does not license iOS for installation on non-Apple hardware. As of October 4, 2011, Apple's App Store contained more than 500,000 iOS applications, which have collectively been downloaded more than 18 billion times. It had a 26% share of the smartphone operating system units sold in the last quarter of 2010, behind both Google's Android and Nokia's Symbian. In May 2010 in the USA, it accounted for 59% of mobile web data consumption (including use on both the iPod Touch and the iPad).

The user interface of iOS is based on the concept of direct manipulation, using multi-touch gestures. Interface control elements consist of sliders, switches, and buttons. The response to user input is immediate and provides a fluid interface. Interaction with the OS includes gestures such as swipe, tap, pinch, and reverse pinch, all of which have specific definitions within the context of the iOS operating system and its multi-touch interface. Internal accelerometers are used by some applications to respond to shaking the device (one common result is the undo command) or rotating it in three dimensions (one common result is switching from portrait to landscape mode).

iOS is derived from Mac OS X, with which it shares the Darwin foundation, and is therefore a Unix-like operating system.
In iOS, there are four abstraction layers: the Core OS layer, the Core Services layer, the Media layer, and the Cocoa Touch layer. The current version of the operating system (iOS 5.0.1) uses roughly 770 megabytes of the device's storage, varying for each model.

The operating system was unveiled with the iPhone at the Macworld Conference & Expo, January 9, 2007, and released in June of that year.At first, Apple marketing literature did not specify a separate name for the operating system, stating simply that the "iPhone runs OS X".Initially, third-party applications were not supported. Steve Jobs argued that developers could build web applications that "would behave like native apps on the iPhone".On October 17, 2007, Apple announced that a native Software Development Kit (SDK) was under development and that they planned to put it "in developers' hands in February". On March 6, 2008, Apple released the first beta, along with a new name for the operating system: "iPhone OS".

The previous September, Apple had released the iPod touch, which had most of the non-phone capabilities of the iPhone. Apple also sold more than one million iPhones during the 2007 holiday season. On January 27, 2010, Apple announced the iPad, featuring a larger screen than the iPhone and iPod touch, and designed for web browsing, media consumption, and reading iBooks.
In June 2010, Apple rebranded iPhone OS as "iOS". The trademark "IOS" had been used by Cisco for over a decade for its operating system, IOS, used on its routers. To avoid any potential lawsuit, Apple licensed the "IOS" trademark from Cisco.

Version history
Apple licensed the trademark for "iOS" from Cisco Systems (which owned IOS), the same company with which Apple had earlier settled a dispute over the "iPhone" trademark.
Apple released iOS 4 on June 21, 2010, three days before the iPhone 4, in an effort to reduce the strain on Apple's servers. iOS 4 was the first version of the OS to be a free upgrade on the iPod touch; Apple had charged $4.99 for earlier upgrades. Apple previously announced that iPad users with 3.x software would receive a free upgrade to the next major (4.x) release.

iOS 4.0.1 included a fix to the reception signal strength indicator(s). It was released on July 15, 2010, the day before Apple hosted a press conference to discuss its response to the widely publicized iPhone antenna issues. Apple also released iOS 3.2.1 for the iPad which tweaked the tablet's Wi-Fi connectivity, video playback, and copy-and-paste for PDF attachments, among other updates.

iOS 4.1 for the iPhone and iPod touch was released on September 8, 2010; the update fixed some bugs reported by users, improved battery life and added several new features:

Game Center, which allows gamers to play multiplayer games online, upload high scores and unlock achievements (though Apple removed Game Center from the iPhone 3G because of reports of slow performance)
The ability to toggle spell checking on and off
HDR photography (iPhone 4 and 4S only)
Ping, a social music network and discovery tool

iOS 4.1 also updated carrier settings which (at that time in the United States, AT&T 8.0 only). At the same time, TV show rentals became available on the iTunes US Store.iOS 4.2 was never released but instead iOS 4.2.1 was released on November 22, 2010. It added iPad compatibility. Further on iOS 4.2.5 was released as a demo version for the CDMA version of the iPhone 4. This iPhone 4 variant was released for Verizon Wireless customers in the US on February 10, 2011, but pre-ordering was available for qualified Verizon Wireless Customers on February 3. The version released with the phone, 4.2.6, has some slight UI changes specifically for the CDMA version of the phone, including a "Personal Hotspot" switch in the Settings app, a service which has to be activated by the carrier in order for the feature to be usable. This became available for purchase from Verizon as a separate plan, as is currently possible on other smartphones.

iOS 4.3 was released to the public on March 9, 2011, two days before the iPad 2 was available in the United States. In addition to earlier features, the public release of iOS 4.3 included many new features such as a Nitro JavaScript engine in Safari, making Safari run up to twice as fast according to Apple.iTunes Home Sharing also received a major revision in iOS 4.3; it allows users to connect to their home Wi-Fi networks and stream content from iOS devices to speakers, TVs and other devices, or vice versa. Personal Hotspot for iPhone 4 is a new feature to GSM iPhones (previously released with the Verizon CDMA iPhone) that allows the user to create a Wi-Fi network with an iPhone 4 and provide Internet access for up to five other devices on Verizon Wireless, three on AT&T. In addition, the side button on the iPad is now customizable, with users able to use it either as a system sound mute or as a screen rotation lock. iOS 4.3 was not released for CDMA iPhones, which stayed on 4.2.x versions until they were upgraded to iOS 5 with the rest of the iOS line on October 12, 2011.

iOS 5.0 and its features were announced on June 6 at the WWDC 2011 keynote address. The update was released at 6pm GMT on October 12, 2011. iOS 5 introduced the iCloud service and the Notification Center, as well as improvements to native apps such as Camera. The operating system also features new applications, such as the "Reminders" app and "Newsstand", an application that lets you buy newspapers and magazines. Newsstand is the first native application to run on the homescreen. "iMessage" is an application that allows iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad users to communicate, much like a chat service only used between these devices. The iMessage feature has been integrated into the "Messages" application on the iPhone. The iPod application on the iPhone and iPad has now been split into the Music and Video application, just as it had been on the iPod touch. It also added updated security and bug fixes. iOS 5 also brings long-awaited Hindi virtual keyboard. According to Apple, the new OS has over 200 new features.

iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S is a touchscreen slate smartphone developed by Apple Inc. It is the fifth generation of the iPhone, a device that combines a 3.5-inch (89 mm) touchscreen iPod, mobile phone, and internet client. It retains the exterior design of its predecessor, the iPhone 4, but is host to a range of improved hardware specifications and software updates.
Integrated software and hardware changes support the introduction of new user interface and functions by Apple, including the voice recognizing and talking assistant called Siri, personal computer independence, cloud-sourced data (iCloud) and an improved camera system. A selection of the device's functions may be voice-controlled.
The iPhone 4S was unveiled at Apple's "Let's Talk iPhone" event on October 4, 2011 in Cupertino, California. Apple started taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4S on October 7, 2011 in seven initial countries (United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Japan) with the first delivery date set for October 14, 2011, and available on that same day for direct store sales in those countries. It was released in 22 more European, American and Asian countries, including Ireland, Mexico and Singapore on October 28.
It will be available on 100 carriers in 70 countries overall, including AT&T, Verizon, and for the first time, also for Sprint and C Spire customers in the United States. In Japan, it is available for au (a KDDI brand) and Okinawa Cellular, for the first time. For US customers, while pre-orders for purchasers buying contracts started on October 7, 2011, unlocked (contract-free) sales started on November 11, 2011.The Associated Press said that AT&T described early iPhone 4S demand as "extraordinary".

Announcement
Speculation about Apple's next generation phone, including various specifications and a predicted name ("iPhone 5"), were widespread in the time preceding its debut. After the iPhone 4S was announced, there was some disappointment about the new phone's name.As early as May 2011, some leaks had a fairly accurate description of the product including the name "iPhone 4S", the A5 chip, HSDPA,new/better camera, and Sprint carrying.
There were no external differences between the iPhone 4 CDMA model and the iPhone 4S; all changes were internal (slight external differences between the iPhone 4 GSM model and the iPhone 4S exist, as said differences existed between the CDMA and GSM models of the iPhone 4).It has been described as a "dramatic leap forward in technological innovation and sophistication...".
The keynote was the first in which Tim Cook led since the Verizon keynote earlier in the year. It was also Cook's first product launch without Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs, whose health was deteriorating and who died the day after the announcement of iPhone 4S. Tim Carmody of Wired praised Cook for focusing on company achievements, calling him a "global business thinker" and a "taskmaster".One unique aspect was that the whole management team of several people took turns discussing the new products.

Reception
Initial reaction to the iPhone 4S announcement was generally favorable. Echoing technology pundits, Reuters suggested that the lack of a more radical departure from the iPhone 4 could open new market opportunities for rivals.[19] Shares of Samsung Electronics, HTC and Nokia gained on Wednesday after the 4S was announced, while Apple stock fell. However, later in the day Apple shares rebounded ending with a 1% gain.

Analyst C. K. Lu of Gartner believed that Apple no longer had the leading edge and that the 4S would only sell due to brand loyalty, as fans had been expecting an iPhone 5 with a thinner profile, edge-to-edge screen, and stronger features.[19] These same fans had also wanted a cheaper, stripped-down iPhone 4.The German phone company Deutsche Telekom said they were "satisfied" with consumer interest.
With the launch of the pre-order, AT&T said that the demand for the iPhone 4S was "extraordinary".Over 200,000 pre-orders were placed within 12 hours of release through AT&T. In addition, AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint sold-out pre-order stock by October 8, 2011 and by October 9 there was a 1-2 week estimate on new pre-orders to be filled. On October 20, 2011 AT&T surpassed 1 million iPhone 4S activations.
On October 10th, Apple announced that over one million iPhone 4Ss had been pre-ordered within the first 24 hours of it being on sale, beating the 600,000 device record set by the iPhone 4.The 16-month wait between the iPhone 4 and 4S may have contributed to overwhelming sales as well.

By October 11, early reviews of the iPhone 4S were released. Reviewers noted the software voice assistant, camera system, and processing speeds as significant advantages over the prior model. Retrevo surveyed more than 1,300 U.S. consumers and reported that 71 percent of all smartphone owners were not disappointed by the new iPhone 4S but 47 percent or almost a half of current iPhone 4 owners were; 12 percent were hoping for a bigger display, 21 percent wanted a refreshed design, and 29 percent desired 4G.
Unlike prior iPhone models, the sales of the iPhone 4 had not climaxed before the 4S introduction. For example, the 3G model came out when sales of the first iPhone had declined to less than half their peak.In addition, iPhone 4 users had high marks for being satisfied with their phone. Nevertheless, they wanted even more from Apple forgetting that from Apple's perspective the iPhone 4 was still a hit and that new users may not be bothered by the look and feel staying the same, because they did not formerly own an iPhone 4.
On October 17, 2011, Apple had announced that four million copies iPhone 4S were sold in the first three days of release, and 25 million iOS users had upgraded to the version supported by the iPhone 4S, iOS 5. Philip W. Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, stated that the “iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend—the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days.”
On October 19, 2011, private wireless carrier C Spire Wireless announced they will be beginning selling the 4S as well in the United States. Currently, it is the smallest provider and first privately-held carrier to offer the 4S.

Design
The iPhone 4S retains almost all of the same design features as its predecessor, the iPhone 4.The front and back are both flat, the screen being made of glass. There is a camera on the back and the sides are stainless steel with metal buttons. It keeps the 3.5 inch (8.89 cm) screen of past iPhones with the "home" button at the bottom.
The iPhone 4S comes in two colors, black and white. It is an amalgamation of a hand-held computer, cell-phone, GPS, digital/video camera, and music player into one device, powered by a rechargeable 1432mAh lithium-polymer battery.
A version without a camera has been released for the Singapore Army, where cameras have been banned from army camps since 2007.The camera-less iPhones can be purchased by anyone, not just army corps.

 Hardware
Antenna
Improving on the external stainless steel, dual-antenna design of its predecessor, the iPhone 4, Apple has redesigned the antenna in the iPhone 4S so that the cellular radio in the phone can alternate between two antennas, depending on which is sending/receiving the best signal. These two antennas form part of the stainless steel band that covers the sides of the iPhone 4 and 4S.
The bands on the iPhone 4 are divided into four antennas, cellular, Bluetooth, GPS, and Wi-Fi. In both the iPhone 4 and 4S, the cellular (GSM) antenna is divided into two. Therefore, if the iPhone 4S is gripped in such a way as to attenuate one piece of the cellular antenna, the radio will switch to the other piece that isn’t being gripped.
The iPhone 4S can support a maximum output theoretically of up to 14.4 Mbps with HSDPA as a result of an upgraded radio chip inside the phone, in addition to being a world phone, so both CDMA and GSM customers can roam internationally on GSM networks. It also supports Bluetooth 4.0.

Camera
The camera on the iPhone 4S can shoot 8 MP stills (3264 by 2448 pixels) and record 1080p videos at 30 frames per second with upgraded quality[38] (30% better clarity, 26% better white balance, color accuracy) due to an additional lens, IR filter, a wider f/2.4 aperture, and Image signal processor (built-in A5).
The camera can now be accessed directly from the lock screen, and the volume up button as a shutter trigger. The built-in gyroscope is able to stabilize the camera while recording video. Other features of the camera are macro (for close up pictures) and faster capture including being able to take its first picture in 1.1 seconds and the next half a second later.

Input and output (I/O)
Like the iPhone 4 the 3.5 inch 960 by 640 pixel Retina display supports multitouch, a technology that allows multiple simultaneous touch inputs. Siri, a voice control feature exclusive to the iPhone 4S, interprets voice commands and can give visual and auditory feedback.[40] The iPhone 4S has two volume buttons and a ring/silent switch on the left side.
On the top left there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and the lock/power button is situated on the top right edge of the device. The right side of the device is devoid of inputs except for a SIM card slot. The bottom of the device features a speaker output on the right and a microphone input on the left with Apple's proprietary 30-pin dock connector in the center. The top left on the back of the device houses an 8 megapixel f/2.4 aperture camera with an LED flash.

The iPhone 4S supports video out via AirPlay and various Apple A/V cables. Supported video formats include such as H.264 (1080p 30 fps max.), MPEG-4 video, and motion JPEG (M-JPEG).
In addition to user inputs, the device also has several sensors that give the phone information about its orientation and external conditions. These include a 3-axis gyro, an accelerometer, a proximity sensor, and an ambient light sensor.

Power and battery
he iPhone 4S is stated to have 200 hours standby time (iPhone 4 300 hours), 8 hours talk time on 3G (iPhone 4-7 hours), 14 hours talk time on 2G, 6 hours 3G browsing, and 9 hours Wi-Fi browsing.[37][6][41] Additionally, it can sustain up to 10 hours of video playback or 40 hours of audio playback.

Processor, memory, and storage
The iPhone 4S has a dual-core Apple A5 processor, compared to the one-core Apple A4 processor used in the iPhone 4. It has 512 MB of RAM, the same as its predecessor. Maximum available storage size increased to 64 GB whilst the 32 GB and 16 GB model options were retained. The screen is the same as the prior generation iPhones; 3.5 inch, 640×960 resolution (Apple's "retina" design).
The improvement in interactive multimedia applications was obvious compared to its predecessor. However, applications that take more advantage of the new specs will take time to be developed and released. In one early review it scored 677 in a Geekbench benchmark speedtest compared to 380 for the iPhone 4, higher being better.

 Features
 Gaming
The iPhone 4S uses the Apple A5 system-on-a-chip that uses an Imagination Technologies PowerVR SGX graphics processing unit, which features pixel, vertex, and geometry shader hardware, supporting OpenGL ES 2.0.. The SGX543 is an improved version of the GPU used in the iPhone 4S’ predecessor, the iPhone 4. However, the iPhone 4S uses a dual-core model, the SGX543, that is integrated with the Apple A5 SoC in the same way as the iPad 2.
Apple’s claim that the iPhone 4S can process graphics up to “seven times faster” than the iPhone 4 was corroborated by Epic Games President Mike Capps. At the “Let’s Talk iPhone” event held by Apple on October 4, 2011, Capps demonstrated Epic Games’ Infinity Blade 2, the sequel to Infinity Blade, on an iPhone 4S. Capps boasted that the game uses Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 and features the same graphic techniques used in the Xbox 360 game Gears of War 3.
Gaming on the iPhone 4S has been likened to the PlayStation Vita, that features the same SGX GPU only in a quad-core configuration, and the Nintendo 3DS handheld game consoles. Further, the iPhone 4S’ ability to process 30 million polygons per second has been compared to the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 home video game consoles that can process 275 million and 500 million polygons per second respectively.
CVG’s deputy editor Andy Robinson told TechRadar that the “[iPhone 4S] is certainly laying down some serious credibility for the iPhone as a core gaming device. Not only is it now pushing out games that simply eclipse the [Nintendo 3DS] visually, but features like cloud saving and TV streaming support are really exciting for gamers.”

Senior Gaming Analyst at Jon Peddie Research Ted Pollak believes the biggest improvement to gaming on the iPhone 4S is the voice control features, noting that “one of the features that Nintendogs players loved was the ability to talk to it. There’s no reason why a game like that couldn’t be done on the iPhone 4S, and much more sophisticated given the voice control shown.”

Siri
The iPhone 4S introduced a new automated voice control system called "Siri", unique to the 4S,that allows the user to give the iPhone commands, which it can execute and respond to. For example, iPhone commands such as "What is the weather going to be like?" will generate a response such as "The weather is to be cloudy and rainy and drop to 54 degrees today". These commands can vary greatly and control almost every section of the phone. The commands given do not have to be specific and can be used with natural language. Siri can be accessed by holding down the home button for an extra amount of time (compared to using the regular function). An impact of Siri, as pointed out by Apple video messages, is that it is much easier and/or possible for people to use device functions while driving, exercising, or when they have their hands full.[12] It also means people with trouble reading, seeing, or typing can access the phone more easily.

Its not clear what the impact of Siri speaking in public will be, but it does not have to speak out loud and can be used with headphones. One interface feature of Siri is that it can be activated by holding the phone to a person's head. The iPhone 4S has a proximity sensor.
At launch Siri supports French, English, and German languages. In one early review, German Siri handled the language well but needed more information from supporting databases, such as route information and possibly the Wolfram Alpha "Computational Knowledge Engine". One early review noted its good performance in English, although it did confuse "4" and "for" at one point. The New York Times said Siri's ability to comprehend was "mind-blowing".
The Harvard Business School described Siri as the new phone's most interesting feature, and how well it works could make or break it. Apple says the A5 is a reason why Siri may not come to other devices even with iOS 5 upgrades. However, some gadget reviewers believes otherwise. Several smartphone reviewing sites have pointed out that Apple is making Siri exclusive to the iPhone 4S because that is the only selling point of the phone compared to the prior iPhone 4.

Siri is supported by the A5 chip and is currently a feature only available on the iPhone 4S.Siri also needs internet access to function. When used for the first time, Siri does not require setup but does adapt to a user's voice over time, and can also be taught certain things directly. A number of aspects of the software can be configured, such as language and its voice feedback ability (its ability to talk back).
At launch Apple said Siri is still in beta, and it has a certain set of abilities with restrictions, such as being able to dictate texts but not emails, and only controlling certain apps.Nevertheless one area it may be useful is driving and exercise activities. It is integrated with Apple's Find My Friends program (which debuted at the same time as the 4S), so Siri can potentially answer questions like "Where is my wife?"When it is enabled, Apple's Find My Friends lets a social group know where each other are and Siri can use this information to answer questions.Siri can be taught information, so it knows who a person is referring to when they use generic terminology on that device.

Recently iPhone 4S users reported that there is a security loophole in iPhone's Siri which allows unauthorized users to bypass the passcode lock to perform tasks like making calls and sending messages with the help of Siri. However, this loophole can be dissolved simply by changing settings on the iPhone 4S.
The British English voice for Siri is provided by Jon Briggs. At present, Siri's functionality is limited outside of the US. For example, asking Siri in the UK to list local businesses, to navigate somewhere, or to give traffic information, gets the reply "I can only look for businesses, maps and traffic in the United States, and when you're using U.S. English. Sorry about that."Apple have promised to release updates in 2012 to address this problem.

 Messaging
On the iPhone 4S, texting can be done aided by the voice assistant which allows speech-to-text.In addition to regular texting, messaging on the iPhone 4S is supported by iMessage, a specialized instant messaging program and service that allows unlimited texting to other Apple iOS 5 products. This supports the inclusion of media in text messages, integration with the device's voice controlled software assistant, and read receipts for sent messages. iMessages are in blue, and regular texts in green in the screen bubbles.
Input to the computer comes from a keyboard displayed on the multi-touch screen or by voice-to text by speaking into the microphone. Entered text is supported by predictive and suggestion software as well as a spell checker, that includes many regional dialects like Swiss spoken French.
Since Siri can send text messages, a person can text and drive without taking their eyes off the road, as shown in Apple's video ad another example, is that a person can ask Siri for information while they are cooking and their hands are messy. It also makes it much easier for people with physical disabilities such as blindness to compose and send text messages.

Language
At announcement plans were in place for the iPhone 4S to support many languages from around the world. Different features have different language requirements, such as keyboards compared to the word predictor and spell-checker, which needs a large dictionary of words. Language support is related to the iOS 5 operating system that the device launched with, although not always. The Siri digital assistant supported French, English, and German at launch.[51] Since it uses a software based keyboard supported by the multi-touch display, it can support many different keyboard layouts without having to change physically. The iPhone 4S can display different languages and scripts at the same time.

Network
The device is a world phone and can work on both GSM & CDMA networks. On a 2G (on GSM) network it supports up to 14 hours of talk time. It can download at maximum rate of 14.4 Mbps on a HSPA+ network such as AT&T Mobility's. On CDMA networks however it is limited to 3.1 Mbps, this includes Verizons Wireless.

 Operating system
iPhone 4S was announced with Apple’s iOS 5 operating system, which Apple claims as having over 200 new features compared to the prior version. On the 4S, the Apple A5 processor and iOS 5 work together to support many subsystems of the device, such as data processing for the camera. Some major tasks performed include browsing the internet with Safari, voice assistance with Siri, cellular communications, media playback, and applications.
It supports PC and Mac freedom, where updates can be downloaded by over-the-air to the device.[Another feature is the ability to have Apple send a real card in the mail with the Apple Cards application.

Accessories
Bumper
An iPhone 4/4S Bumper is a ring of rubber and plastic that surrounds the edge of the iPhone 4S. The inner part is synthetic rubber with the external band made of plastic. It was released to deal with the reception issues and was available for free until 30 September 2010.
A Bumper wraps around the edges of the device protecting the edges, and to a lesser extent, the screen. The Bumper does not cover the front or rear of the phone, though it does slightly raise it off whatever surface it is placed upon. Further, the plastic band houses metallic buttons for the volume controls and sleep/wake button. The six holes in the Bumper enable access to the mute switch, dock connector, headphone jack, speaker, and microphones. Bumpers are available for £25 each, in six colors: black, blue, green, orange, pink, and white.
Since the iPhone 4S has nearly the same design (mute switch has been moved slightly similar to the iPhone 4 CDMA model) some bumpers may fit both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

A small booklet that comes with the iPhone 4S
The documentation that comes with the iPhone 4S, which explains how to perform basic tasks.

The Apple iPhone 4S is planning to launch with 100 carriers in 70 countries in the closing months of 2011.
The device is typically sold to consumers with an initial fee and a two year contract, whereby a person will agree to pay a certain amount upfront then each month pay an additional fee for the time of the agreement. This also pays for using some services, mainly the wireless data transmission to cell phone towers. Depending on the contract, additional services may require more fees or be included. The business that sells the devices offer different types of contracts to people, and may charge different amounts per month. From the standpoint of the business, they subsidize the initial cost of the phone to make it more appealing, eventually recouping the money during a payback period.

North America
 United States
As with the iPhone 4 in the U.S., from October 14, 2011, the iPhone 4S is available on Verizon and AT&T. Further, the iPhone 4S is offered by Sprint and C Spire,[8] new carriers for Apple. This confirms a Wall Street Journal report, that the American telecommunications company Sprint Nextel committed $20 billion to do this. All 3 carriers require a new 2-year contract with the phone in order to obtain the 4S at a subsidized price, in addition to the purchase price of the device. Sprint was the third largest cell-phone carrier in the United States at that time.
In addition to being sold by AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and C Spire, Apple will sell an unlocked version of the iPhone 4S. The phone includes no micro-SIM card and will not work on CDMA Carriers.
Apple is also allowing the iPhone 4S to be sold directly to people without a contract in November 2011, they will work on GSM but not CDMA networks with service from a provider.Unlocked or contract-free phones support micro-SIM cards from networks. The card is a small memory device that plugs into the phone in a small slot/tray, and contains the information for the device to run on that cellular network. Non-contract phones need to gain access to a cellular network service to be used that way.

Apple listed prices for a contract-free unlocked phone in the United States are $649 for the 16 GB model, $749 for 32 GB, and $849 for the 64 GB,compared to $199 (16 GB), $299 (32 GB), and $399 (64 GB), with a two-year contract. If the cost per month is, for example, $130 for unlimited voice and text, that works out to $3120 for the two-year contract (not counting other costs or discounts). Each carrier can offer different advantages, for example, The New York Times says the only U.S. carrier with an unlimited data plan at the 4S launch was Sprint, that AT&T is the fastest, and that Verizon has the best coverage.

Canada
In Canada, the iPhone 4S is offered by all the major networks including Rogers Wireless, Fido Solutions, Bell Mobility,[65] Virgin Mobile Canada,[66] TELUS Mobility and Koodo Mobile, as well as smaller provincial networks such as SaskTel and Manitoba Telecom Services (MTS).

 Mexico
In Mexico, the iPhone 4S is already available on the three major mobile phone companies Telcel, Movistar and Iusacell.

Asia, Pacific
In Australia, all three of the country's major networks carry the handset, with the device available from Vodafone Australia, Optus and Telstra. Contract-free, unlocked models were made available from Apple Retail Stores on October 14, 2011.

In Japan, au by KDDI will join SoftBank Mobile, formerly the sole Japanese carrier of the iPhone, in selling the 4S model. Softbank plans to charge ¥4,410 ($57) a month.
In New Zealand, Vodafone NZ,[67] Telecom XT have both formally announced that they will carry the handset, along with their plans. Vodafone NZ was criticized for the small amount of data on the plans offered compared with Telecom XT. They will sell the handset online and in stores, on contract or on Prepaid, as unlocked models. The handset will also be available from the Apple Online Store on November 11, 2011. Following speculation on technology website Geekzone that the handset would come to rival network Telecom XT, it was officially announced they would not only be carrying iPhone 4S, but also iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS from November 11, 2011. Telecom XT is estimating shipping times as 3–5 days from the launch versus 2–3 weeks from the Apple Online Store, although none of the orders have actually shipped as of the launch day.

In the United Arab Emirates, prices on release date had started with AED 8000+ (2178.35 US$). The prices then continued to drop from 8000 to 6000 and finally to 3000. Etisalat provides iPhone 4s with SIM Card for AED 2749.
In India, the iPhone 4S was released by Airtel and Aircel on November 25, 2011. The pre-order was opened on November 18, with the lowest priced 16 GB model for INR44,500, INR50,900 for the 32 GB version and INR57,500 for the 64 GB version.
In Saudi Arabia, Jarir Bookstore started taking orders for the iPhone 4S in limited quantity in early November through its facebook page with limited choices (no colour options). Although not an official launch, it was the first in the Middle East. An official launch of two Saudi company electronic retail stores, the Extra and Jarir Bookstore on their website was made simultaneous on the same day on November 13, 2011 finally accepting orders. The device was available in Mobily and Saudi Telecom Company (STC) on December 16, 2011.

In the Philippines, there was news in websites that the device was already available on first week of November in Greenhills, but it was stated there that it was not an official company release. However, Smart Communications reported that they had made a partnership deal with Apple Inc. to become the sole carrier of the device in the Philippines despite Globe Telecom's exclusive carrier of iPhone since 2008 of its first release the iPhone 3GS.[76][77] Ernest Co, the Globe CEO, confirmed that they will launch iPhone 4S on the first or second week of December 2011 during Globe Event on November 22, 2011.The device was available on December 16, 2011 via Globe and Smart under a 24-month contract.
In Malaysia, the iPhone 4S went on sale on December 16, 2011, from Maxis, DiGi and Celcom as subsidized phones with a contract. Also, for the first time all iPhone models are available for purchase without contract from the Malaysian Apple Store as well.

iphone 4

The iPhone 4 is a touchscreen slate smartphone developed by Apple Inc. It is the fourth generation iPhone, and successor to the iPhone 3GS. It is particularly marketed for video calling (marketed by Apple as FaceTime), consumption of media such as books and periodicals, movies, music, and games, and for general web and e-mail access. It was announced on June 7, 2010, at the WWDC 2010 held at the Moscone Center, San Francisco, and was released on June 24, 2010, in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Japan. The iPhone 4 runs Apple's iOS operating system, the same operating system as used on prior iPhones, the iPad, and the iPod Touch. It is mainly controlled by a user's fingertips on the multi-touch display, which is sensitive to fingertip contact.

The most noticeable difference between the iPhone 4 and its predecessors is the new design, which incorporates an uninsulated stainless steel frame that acts as the device's antenna. The internal components of the device are situated between two panels of chemically strengthened aluminosilicate glass.[9] It has an Apple A4 processor and 512 MB of eDRAM, twice that of its predecessor and four times that of the original iPhone. Its 3.5-inch (89 mm) LED backlit liquid crystal display with a 960×640 pixel resolution is marketed as the "Retina Display".The latest operating system release is iOS 5.0.1.In October 2011, the iPhone 4S was announced, which retains the same form factor but includes some upgrades such as the A5 processor, iOS 5, and an improved camera.

Prototypes
Before the official unveiling of the iPhone 4 on June 7, 2010, two prototypes were brought to the attention of the media, breaching Apple's normally secretive development process. Many of the speculations regarding technical specifications proved accurate.

Gizmodo leak
On April 19, 2010, gadget website Gizmodo reported that they had purchased an iPhone prototype for $5000, and furthermore, had conducted a product teardown of the device. The prototype is reported to have been lost by an Apple employee, Gray Powell, in Redwood City, California.Shortly after Gizmodo published detailed information about the prototype, Apple's legal associates formally requested for the phone to be returned to Apple, and Gizmodo responded with the intent to cooperate.
On April 22, officers from the Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team (REACT) task force of the California HTTAP Program raided the home of Jason Chen, the Gizmodo editor responsible for reviewing the prototype, seizing all of his computers and hard drives. The Electronic Frontier Foundation criticized the raid as violating journalist source protection laws that forbid the seizure of journalist computers as well as the suspicion that Apple had used its influence as a member of the steering committee which is charged with direction and oversight of the California REACT task force to push police into action in a way that would not normally be conducted for this type of incident. Apple had already received the iPhone prototype before the raid when it was returned by Gizmodo. The District Attorney has stated that the investigation has been suspended, and discontinued searching through the Gizmodo editor's belongings as they determine whether the shield laws are applicable, and cautioned that no charges have been issued at this point.

Taoviet leak
Pictures and video of a second prototype were published on a Vietnamese website, Taoviet, on May 12, 2010. It was almost identical to the first, and used an A4 chip manufactured by Apple. The website purchased the prototype for $4,000.DigiTimes reported that the screen resolution of the new phone was 960-by-640, which was confirmed by Apple at the iPhone 4's official announcement.

Release
The iPhone 4 was made available for pre-order on June 15, 2010. Customers attempting to pre-order the iPhone 4 reported problems with the pre-order process on the U.S. and U.K. online Apple Stores which crashed due to the surge in traffic.the same issue was reported with AT&T and SoftBank, Apple's exclusive partners in the United States and Japan respectively, who suspended advance sales of the iPhone 4 as demand threatened to exceed supply.Retail stores were also unable to complete pre-order transactions due to the servers crashing.
Apple and its partner carriers received 600,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4 in the first 24 hours, the largest number of pre-orders Apple has received in a single day for any device.[23] Engadget reported that at 20:30 UTC, all iPhone 4 pre-order suppliers had sold out.1.7 million iPhone 4s were sold in its first three days of availability.
The iPhone 4 has also been released through Orange in Tunisia and was available in eight cities at the launch. In South Korea, it was released by KT on September 10. In Israel, it was released, too, on September 24, through Cellcom, Pelephone and Orange. It was launched in Thailand on September 23 by AIS, DTAC and True Move, and in Malaysia on September 26 in Kuala Lumpur, and nationwide on September 27 according to the website of Maxis.
The iPhone 4 was released in South Africa on September 22 on the Vodacom and MTN networks, in very limited quantities.[28] The iPhone 4 was launched in Vietnam on September 30 by VinaPhone and Viettel, at first in 3 major cities: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city and Da Nang, and then all over the country by the end of October.
The iPhone 4 was launched in India on May 27, 2011 by Aircel and Airtel. Aircel is releasing the 16 GB iPhone 4 for INR34,500 and the 32 GB one for INR40,990. The smartphone will be available via contract from both service providers.

On January 11, 2011, Verizon announced during a media event that it had reached an agreement with Apple and would begin selling a CDMA iPhone 4 in the United States, ending Apple's exclusivity agreement with AT&T. The Verizon iPhone went on sale on February 10 and pre orders began on February 3.The Verizon iPhone includes the 'Personal Hotspot" feature which allows a user to use the iPhone as a wireless hotspot, with up to 5 devices connecting at one time. The February 3 presale of the iPhone 4 broke Verizon's first day sales records for a single device.

On June 24, 2010, Apple issued a statement that the white iPhone 4 models were proving more "challenging to manufacture" than expected, and initially pushed the release date back to the second half of July. There was a lot of speculation surrounding the delay of the white iPhone 4. Among the most popular rumors are those concerning the phone's internal camera being adversely affected by light leaking in due to the semi-translucent glass and the white paint. Other sources report that the problem relates to Apple's inability to match the white color of the front face plate with that of the home button.[36] On April 27 Apple announced that it would be releasing the white iPhone 4 model on April 28, 2011 for both GSM and CDMA.The release of the white iPhone 4 was carried out on April 28, and is still available for purchase today.
During Apple's official unveiling of the iPhone 4S on October 4, 2011 it was announced that Sprint would begin carrying the reconfigured CDMA iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S in the US on October 14.

Hardware
Display
The display of the iPhone 4 is manufactured by LG under an exclusive contract with Apple. It features an LED backlit TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen with a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch (ppi) on a 3.5 in (8.9 cm) (diagonally measured), 960×640 display. Each pixel is 78 micrometres in width. The display has a contrast ratio of 800:1. The screen is marketed by Apple as the "Retina Display", based on the assertion that a display of approximately 300 ppi at a distance of 12 inches (305 mm) from one's eye, or 57 arcseconds per pixel[42] is the maximum amount of detail that the human retina can perceive. With the iPhone expected to be used at a distance of about 12 inches from the eyes, a higher resolution would allegedly have no effect on the image's apparent quality as the maximum potential of the human eye has already been met.

This claim has been disputed. Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, said in an interview with Wired magazine, that the claims by Jobs are something of an exaggeration: "It is reasonably close to being a perfect display, but Steve pushed it a little too far." Soneira stated that the resolution of the human retina is higher than claimed by Apple, working out to 477 ppi at 12 inches (305 mm) from the eyes, or 36 arcseconds per pixel.

However, Phil Plait, author of Bad Astronomy, whose career includes a collaboration with NASA regarding the camera on the Hubble Space Telescope, responded to the criticism by stating that "if you have [better than 20/20] eyesight, then at one foot away the iPhone 4’s pixels are resolved. The picture will look pixellated. If you have average eyesight, the picture will look just fine."

Camera
The iPhone 4 is the first iPhone model to have two cameras. The LED flash for the rear-facing camera (top) and the forward-facing camera (bottom, left of speaker) are not present in older models.

The iPhone 4 features an additional front-facing VGA camera, and a backside-illuminated 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with a 3.85 mm f/2.8 lens and an LED flash. The rear-facing camera is capable of recording HD video in 720p at 30 frames per second. Both cameras make use of the tap to focus feature, part of iOS 4, for photo and video recording. The rear-facing camera has a 5× digital zoom.

Connectivity
In contrast to Steve Jobs' announcement at WWDC 2010, recent Federal Communications Commission documentation has shown that the iPhone 4 contains a penta-band 3G UMTS antenna, not a quad-band 3G UMTS radio, as advertised by Apple. According to the FCC documentation filed by Apple, the radio inside the iPhone 4 supports 800, 850, 900, 1900, and 2100 MHz. The 800 MHz frequency, which is most commonly used in Japanese mobile phones, is not advertised as being supported by Apple. However, the 800 MHz band is a subset of the 850 MHz band, which probably explains why the device is advertised as quad-band. The chip-sets were manufactured by Skyworks Solutions and Infineon for GSM version.

As with most of Apple's mobile products, the iPhone 4 also uses the 30 pin dock connector as its only external data port.

The iPhone 4 is the first generation of iPhone to have a second microphone used for noise cancellation. It is located on the top of the unit near the headphone jack; the main microphone is on the bottom left.

Gyroscope and accelerometer
The iPhone 4 introduces a gyroscopic sensor that detects 3-axis angular acceleration around the X, Y and Z axes, enabling precise calculation of yaw, pitch, and roll. The gyroscope complements the accelerometer, a sensor that has been present since the original iPhone, which detects the device's acceleration, shake, vibration shock, or fall by detecting linear acceleration along one of three axes (X, Y and Z). The combined data from the accelerometer and the gyroscope provides detailed and precise information about the device's 6-axis movement in space. The 3 axes of the gyroscope combined with the 3 axes of the accelerometer enable the device to recognize approximately how far, fast, and in which direction it has moved in space.

Processor and memory
The iPhone 4 is powered by the Apple A4 chip, which was designed by Intrinsity[citation needed] and, like all prior iPhone models, manufactured by Samsung. This system-on-a-chip is composed of an ARM Cortex-A8 CPU integrated with a PowerVR SGX 535 GPU.The Apple A4 is also used in the iPad where it is clocked at its rated speed of 1 GHz. The clock speed in the iPhone 4 has not been disclosed. All prior models of the iPhone have underclocked the CPU, which typically extends battery life and lowers heat dissipation. The iPhone 4 has 512 MB of eDRAM. The additional eDRAM supports increased performance and multi-tasking.

Storage and Micro-SIM
The iPhone 4 uses a Micro-SIM card on iPhone 4 devices running on a GSM network, which is positioned in an ejectable tray, located on the right side of the device. On a CDMA network, however, the phone connects to the network using an ESN. All prior models have used regular Mini-SIM cards. Depending on the operator, Micro-SIM cards may not be available for all networks globally. As a technical workaround it is possible to trim a Mini-SIM card with a knife or scissors so that it fits into the Micro-SIM tray.[56]

As on prior models, all data is stored in flash memory, 16 or 32 GB, and not on the SIM. Unlike prior generations, the storage capacity is not printed on the back of the unit.

Design
The iPhone 4 features a redesigned structure, designed by Jonathan Ive. Most notably, the bulges of the back panel as well as the band between the front and back are gone and have been replaced with flattened surfaces. The redesign reflects the utilitarianism and uniformity of existing Apple products, such as the iPad and the iMac. The overall dimensions of the iPhone 4 have been reduced from its predecessor.

It is 4.5 inches (110 mm) high, 2.31 inches (59 mm) wide, and 0.37 inches (9.4 mm) deep, compared to the iPhone 3GS, which is 4.55 inches (116 mm) high, 2.44 inches (62 mm) wide, and 0.48 inches (12 mm) deep; making the iPhone 4.24% thinner than its predecessor, the iPhone 3GS. Steve Jobs claims that it is “the thinnest smartphone on the planet".The reduced size of the device is primarily due to the externally placed antenna.

The iPhone 4 is structured around a stainless steel frame that wraps around the edge of the phone, acting both as the primary structure for the device and as the iPhone 4's antennas. This metal band features two slits on the GSM version of the phone, one at the lower left, and one at the top (and a fake slit along the lower right, to cosmetically mirror the one at the lower left) that divide the band into two antenna sections: the left section of the band serves as the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS antenna, and the right and lower sections of the band act as the antenna for GSM and UMTS connectivity.

On the CDMA version of the phone there are four slits in the metal band. Two at the top (on the left and right) and two at the bottom. This divides the metal band into four different segments, which like the GSM version of the phone, serves as different antennas for connectivity. The top portion of the band (divided by the top left and right slits) is for connecting to the CDMA network. The left portion of the metal band is for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS just like the GSM version. The right side is not an antenna, but serves to cosmetically mirror the left side and also to create a similar look to the GSM version of the phone
The internal components are situated between two panels of aluminosilicate glass, described by Apple as being "chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic," theoretically allowing it to be more scratch resistant and durable than the prior models.
In fall 2010, pentalobular screws started to replace the Philips screws used in post-repair units in the US and in production units in Japan.

Software
Facetime
The iPhone 4 supports FaceTime, an embedded video calling application that is able to use either the front or back camera over a Wi-Fi connection to communicate with another iPhone 4, the fourth-generation iPod Touch, an iPad2 or any Macintosh computer running Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Accessories
Bumper
An iPhone 4 Bumper is a ring of rubber and plastic that surrounds the edge of the iPhone 4. The inner part is rubber with the external band made of plastic. The Bumper wraps around the edges of the device protecting the edges, and to a lesser extent, the screen. The Bumper does not cover the front or rear of the phone, though it does slightly raise the iPhone off whatever surface it is sitting on.

Additionally, the plastic band houses metallic buttons for the volume controls and sleep/wake button. The six holes in the Bumper enable access to the mute switch, dock connector, headphone jack, speaker, and microphones.

Technical issues
Some users have reported a yellow discoloration of the screen when they first received the phone which disappeared after several days, which was attributed to the glass lamination glue that was used. It did not have time to dry fully before the unit reached consumers due to the speed of manufacturing.Another issue reported by some users within days of the iPhone 4 release was that during calls the proximity sensor can be insensitive, so that facial contact with the touchscreen can end calls, mute calls, and dial other numbers.

Antenna
Shortly after the iPhone 4 was launched, some consumers reported that signal strength of the phone was reduced when touching the lower left edge of the phone, bridging one of the two locations which separates the two antennas, resulting in dropped calls in some areas with lower signal reception. In response, Apple issued a statement advising that customers should "avoid gripping [the phone] in the lower left corner" when making or receiving a call.

As a consequence of this problem, it was reported on July 2, 2010 that several iPhone 4 users were planning on suing Apple and AT&T for fraud by concealment, negligence, intentional misrepresentation and defective design. The legal challenge was started by California law firm Kershaw, Cutter & Ratinoff, who set up a website to recruit disenchanted iPhone 4 buyers for a lawsuit against Apple.Later that day, Apple issued another statement stating that it had discovered the cause of the "dramatic drop in bars".

Apple explained how the formula it used to calculate the number of bars to display was "wrong". Apple promised to correct the issue and release a software update within a few weeks that would address the "mistake", which had been present since the original iPhone. The New York Times commented that "the failure to detect this longstanding problem earlier is astonishing."
Consumer Reports initially stated that the iPhone 4's signal issues are not "unique, and may not be serious" and it continued to mention that signal loss is a problem that is faced by the entire smartphone industry. It has been such a problem that Apple made a formal apology. The next day, the magazine altered their stance after encountering instances of dropped calls. The magazine rejected Apple's explanation after conducting tests in a controlled environment, and comparing the results against prior generations of iPhone. It sarcastically pointed out that using a piece of tape to cover the lower left antenna gap was one way to fix the problem, but recommended that consumers who "want an iPhone that works well without a masking-tape fix" purchase the iPhone 3GS instead. The magazine also tested the iPhone 4 while it was wearing a Bumper, a frame-like cover sold by Apple that prevents direct contact with the antenna, reporting that it did resolve the problem. CNN repeated Consumer Reports' statement that a small amount of duct tape had proven an effective fix to the iPhone 4's dropped call issue.

On July 16, 2010, at a press conference, Steve Jobs announced that Apple would provide all iPhone 4 owners with a free case to help solve the antenna issue and a refund to those users who had already purchased a Bumper. The free case offer would be valid until September 30, 2010, when Apple would re-evaluate the situation.[75][76] To get a free case, owners were able to apply via an app installed on the phone found in the App Store from July 22, 2010 to September 30, 2010. Jobs also announced that Apple could not produce enough Bumpers for all owners of the phone, but would source a supply and offer a range of cases.Additionally, Jobs cited figures from AppleCare which showed that only 0.55 percent of all iPhone 4 users have complained to the company about the issue, while the number of phones returned to Apple was 1.7 percent – 4.3 percentage points less than the number of iPhone 3GS models that were returned in the first month of the phone's launch.
Consumer Reports noted that the solution was not permanent, though a good first step. However, because Jobs did not specify a time line for fixing the problem, and the offering for a free bumper only being a temporary solution, PC World decided to remove the iPhone 4 from its "Top 10 Cell Phones" chart and reassign it to a pending rating.
AnandTech researched iPhone 4 antenna and identified that its outer construction provides 5–9 dB (6.9–9 times) better sensitivity comparing to common internal antenna design of iPhone 3Gs (the phone keeps working connection with signal as low as −120/121 dB comparing to usual −113/115 dB).
Despite the negative media attention regarding the antenna issues, 72% of iPhone 4 users say that they are "very satisfied" with their iPhone 4 according to an August 2010 survey by ChangeWave Research.

Camera image fault
Reports about iPhone 4 cameras being rendered useless by a peculiar fault started to show up on the Internet in September 2010. Under certain lighting conditions the back camera produces a large green 'halo' in the center of the image.[82] This renders many of these images to be of much lower quality than what the iPhone 3GS is capable of producing under similar lighting conditions. Reports started surfacing on forums and have since been picked up by major media sources.

Compass
The built in Compass application has a couple of minor software issues.[citation needed] In use it displays the iPhone's position at the bottom of the compass display (derived from the inbuilt A-GPS facility). While this positional information is correct for most of the world, there is a minor issue that if the longitude is greater than zero and less than one degree west of the meridian, the app incorrectly reports the longitude as being east of the meridian. This was fixed with iOS 5.0.

Also when crossing the date line, the longitude changes from 179°59'59" W directly to 179°59'59" E (or vice versa) missing out 180°0'0" E. Crossing the meridian, the display correctly shows 0°0'0" E.

Critical reception
Reaction to the announcement
Media reaction to Steve Jobs' announcement of the iPhone 4 was generally positive. The announcement included information that had not been covered by Gizmodo. Fox News commented that "seeing it in action is far more informative than staring at Gizmodo's photos of a busted test unit".Rhodri Marsden of The Independent said that "aside from the introduction of face-to-face video calling, it's not a staggering feature set," instead focusing on how the device is "more powerful than its predecessor, speedier, easier to use and will make previously laborious tasks seem like a cinch".
CNET reacted to the announcement by explaining how it believes that iMovie for iOS was the "most exciting part of this year's WWDC Keynote". The article noted how the iPhone 4, unlike current cameras, can record HD content and then edit it from the same device, labeling it a "true mobile editing suite".

Reviews
Reviews of the iPhone 4 have been generally favorable. Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal called the device "the best device in its class". Engadget named it the "best smartphone on the market" in June 2010. CNET gave the iPhone 4 a rating of 8.6 out of 10, one of the highest ratings it has given any smartphone. TechRadar gave the device 4.5/5 stars.Consumer Reports said the signal problem was the reason they did not rate it a "recommended" model, although the other tests ranked it highest among smart phones.
Joshua Topolsky of Engadget described the device's industrial design as being "more detailed and sophisticated" than its predecessor.

iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3GS (styled iPhone 3G[S] by many blogs is the third generation of iPhone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It was introduced on June 8, 2009 at the WWDC 2009 which took place at the Moscone Center, San Francisco.

Its features primarily consist of faster performance, a camera with higher resolution and video ability, voice control, and support for 7.2 Mbit/s HSDPA downloading (but remains limited to 384 kbps uploading as Apple had not implemented the HSUPA protocol). It was released in the U.S., Canada and six European countries on June 19, 2009,in Australia and Japan on June 26, and internationally in July and August 2009.

The iPhone 3GS runs Apple's iOS operating system, as is used on the iPad and iPod touch. It is controlled mostly by a user's fingertips on a multi-touch display. The iPhone 3GS is preceded by the iPhone 3G and succeeded by the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 3GS was made available for pre-order on June 8, 2009 and released on June 19 in Canada, the United States, and 7 European countries, and on June 26 in Australia and the United Kingdom. Within the first weekend of its release, over one million iPhone 3GS's were sold. July and August 2009 saw the release of the iPhone 3GS internationally.

After the iPhone 4 was announced, an 8 GB (Black only) iPhone 3GS was released which was made available at a reduced price. Apple's decision to continue selling the iPhone 3GS alongside the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S makes the 3GS the longest running produced iPhone hardware to date.

Bootrom
iPhone 3GS models with new bootroms started appearing in mid-September 2009 which had blocked the "24k" exploit used in prior bootroms which were used mainly for iOS jailbreaking. This made devices with the new bootrom harder to jailbreak although not impossible. This marked the first time Apple slightly modified their devices midway through its supposed cycle (usually a one year cycle).

 Features
The new features of the iPhone 3GS are mainly internal changes regarding speed, for which the "S" in "iPhone 3GS" stands.[10] Though in addition to the upgrades mainly regarding performance, various software features were also introduced exclusive to the iPhone 3GS. All of the exclusive features were incorporated into the iPhone 4.

 Display
The display on the device is designed by Apple and made by LG, it features an LCD capacitive touchscreen with a pixel density of 163 pixels per inch (ppi) on a 3.5 in (8.9 cm) 480-by-320 display. Improvements over its predecessor's screen include 24-bit color emulation (18-bit color display plus dithering)[11] for a more color rich display and oleophobic coating to help reduce fingerprints on the display. The capacitive touchscreen is designed for a bare finger, or multiple fingers for multi-touch sensing.

 Camera
The iPhone 3GS features an improved 3 megapixel camera manufactured by OmniVision. In addition to the higher megapixel count, it also features auto-focus, auto white balance and auto macro and is capable of capturing VGA video.

The iPhone 3GS's Camera app features a slider which allows users to switch between capturing photos and recording videos, a tap-to-focus feature which allows users to tap on an area of the camera image to auto-focus on, 5x digital zoom (iOS 4 and 5), auto focus and auto exposure lock when holding an area down (iOS 5 only), and gridlines for composition (iOS 5 only).

Processor and memory
The iPhone 3GS is powered by the Samsung APL0298C05 chip, which was designed and manufactured by Samsung. This system-on-a-chip is composed of an ARM Cortex-A8 CPU core underclocked to 600 MHz (from 833 MHz), integrated with a PowerVR SGX 535 GPU.

It has 256 MB of eDRAM, twice the amount of the 3G, allowing for increased performance and multi-taskingApple claims the iPhone 3GS is 2x faster than its predecessor, showing demonstrations of apps loading in just 2–10 seconds compared to 15–30 seconds on the iPhone 3G.

Storage
As on previous models, all data is stored in flash memory and not in the SIM and it does not offer any options to expand storage. Initially it was only available in 16 and 32 GB though an 8 GB model was later released, with Apple discontinuing the 16 and 32 GB models, forcing those needing more storage to select an iPhone 4, or buy an older model 3GS.

 Power and battery
The iPhone 3GS is powered by an internal 3.7 V 1219 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion polymer battery and is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 400 full charge and discharge cycles. A battery life indicator in percentage was also exclusive to the iPhone 3GS.

Apple claims that the 3GS can last for up to ten hours of video, nine hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi, twelve hours of 2G talk time, or five on 3G, 30 hours of music, or 300 hours of standby.

Magnetometer
A magnetometer is also built-in the iPhone 3GS, which is used to measure the strength and/or direction of the magnetic field in the vicinity of the device. Sometimes certain devices or radio signals can interfere with the magnetometer requiring users to either move away from the interference or re-calibrate by moving the device in a figure 8 motion. The iPhone 3GS also features an exclusive Compass app which shows a compass that points in the direction of the magnetic field.

Connectivity
In addition to the iPhone 3G's tri-band UMTS/HSDPA radio and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio, the 3GS also adds support for 7.2 Mbit/s HSDPA allowing faster downlink speeds though upload speeds remain the same as Apple had not implemented the HSUPA protocol. Other updates include the addition of a built-in Nike+iPod sensor which eliminates the need for an external sensor and allows native Nike+iPod support. The Bluetooth server on the iPhone 3GS has also been slightly improved adding support for Bluetooth 2.1 specifications.

Voice control
Voice Control was introduced as an exclusive feature of the iPhone 3GS and allows for the controlling of the phone and music features of the phone by voice. There are two ways to activate Voice Control: hold the Home button while in the home screen for a few seconds; or, change the effect of what double-clicking the home button does so it will activate Voice Control (only before iOS 4, where double clicking the Home button opens the multitasking bar).

Accessibility features
VoiceOver, Color Inversion, and Text Zoom were introduced as exclusive features to the iPhone 3GS. VoiceOver is a feature that dictates music details, system menus, text, and other things which was first introduced on the third generation iPod shuffle. Color inversion reverses the color scheme from black on white to white on black, while Text Zoom allows users to zoom into a text on the screen .

Design
The reverse of the iPhone 3G (left) is almost identical to that of the 3GS, differentiated only by the latter's reflective silver text which now matches the silver Apple logo, replacing the 3G's grey text.

The iPhone 3GS retains the same design its predecessor used which featured a glossy metal back with tapered edges which gives users a better grip of the phone. It also features metal buttons just like its predecessor's.

The iPhone 3GS and its predecessor are almost identical though the 3GS is differentiated only by the latter's reflective silver text on the reverse side which now matches the silver Apple logo, replacing the 3G's grey text. Unlike its predecessor, the iPhone 3GS was available in white and black for both models (16 GB and 32 GB) although the current 8 GB model is only available in black.

Critical reception
Reviews
Reviews of the iPhone 3GS have been generally mixed to favorable. Walter Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal described the device packed with "new features that makes a great product even better, but for many users, the software may be enough of a boost to keep them from buying the new model."[12] Engadget also criticized that "the additions of video recording, a compass, and a speed bump just don't seem that compelling to us".
The device managed to receive numerous favorable reviews, CNET gave the iPhone 3GS a 4/5 stars citing the battery life improvements and speed bump alone are good enough although it might leave you wanting more,Engadget praised the performance improvements describing it "a bigger speed bump than you'll come to expect".TechRadar gave the device a 4.5/5 stars describing the device "feature filled but certainly not worth upgrading for"

However the 8 GB version of the device has received more favorable reviews mainly because it comes pre-installed with iOS 4. Jason Snell of Macworld praised the iPhone 3GS citing that "The device's internal changes shines in the iOS 4 update, making the iPhone 3GS a worthwhile upgrade compared to its predecessor although a little too late compared to the iPhone 4".TIPB cited that "aside from hardware specific features like FaceTime, Retina Display, and gyroscope support, the bottom line is iPhone 3GS users are getting the same software that makes the iPhone 4 great".

Issues
Overheating
Shortly after the release of the iPhone 3GS, some users reported overheating of the device while in heavy use, and others reported discoloration of the device due to heat (particularly on the white models). The discoloration issues were largely discounted as being as a result of iPhone covers rubbing against the back of the iPhone.
Apple responded to the heat issue reports by warning users against leaving their iPhones in a car on a hot day, leaving it in direct sunlight for extended periods of time, and refraining from heavy usage while in a hot/sunny environment. It is also worth pointing out the temperature specifications in which the iPhone should be operated, which follows safety standards in the countries the 3GS was released.

Continued support
iOS 5
After the release of the iPhone 4S, the 3GS was still offered for free until November 2011, when AT&T raised the price to 99 cents with no explanation as to why.The 99c price is only available with a two-year contract on AT&T in the United States and a three-year contract on Telus, Rogers, and Bell and Fido Solutions in Canada. This is a departure from Apple's previous trends, in which only two phones were sold.

2012 New Bootrom and Baseband Update
After the release of the iPhone 4S, Apple kills the unlock for the new iPhone 3Gs that was produced after week 36th of 2011 by quietly updating its baseband hardware from a Infineon Baseband chip to a Toshiba Baseband chip. Although the new chip uses the same modem firmware as the Infineon chip, it cannot be updated to iPad baseband 06.15.00 that is still vulnerable to AT+XAPP exploit.
